On Thursday May 15, Elizabeth City Fireman Jeffrey Vaughn 46 was riding his motorcycle on Halstead Boulevard in Elizabeth City when the motorcycle’s rear wheel slipped and he lost control of his motorcycle. The motorcycle struck a road median and came to a rest in the opposite lane. Vaughn’s injuries included a broken ankle, lacerated liver and broken ribs. Vaughn was released from the hospital the following Monday, however he suffered a seizure while visiting a restaurant the day he was released from the hospital and died soon after returning to the hospital.

The 2003 Harley-Davidson Fatboy was originally modified to run on vegetable oil by a high school class in Pennsylvania. Keystone Biofuels then recruited Mark Wootton's AutoTech II class at Currituck County High School to repair the motorcycle and turn it into a theme bike. The project took about four months and $20,000 in parts to finish. Currituck students working on the project included Bryan Leary, Adam Link, Art Perry. The motorcycle is scheduled to be featured on the television show "American Thunder" in June.

On a sunny Saturday, Feb. 9, 2008, eight Airhead BMW motorcycle riders and friends gathered at Brent Hollowell’s home in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina for some mid winter BMW motorcycle therapy and camaraderie. Read the entire story with pictures

According to police officials the unidentified motorcyclist was traveling west on Main Street in South Mills abround 3 pm on Saturday, Jan. 12 when he swerved to avoid hitting a Hummer SUV entering the road from Joys Creek Road. The motorcyclist was thrown from his motorcycle. Due to the serious nature of his injuries, the man was flown by an emergency helicopter to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.

Ivan Histand, 41 was seriously injured when his BMW motorcycle ran into the back of a car driven by Donald L. Black, 51 of Hyattsville, Md. The accident occurred at the intersection of Tulls Creek Road and N.C. Highway 168 on Sunday, August 19, 2007. Histand, from Gloucester Va. was airlifted to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital for treatment. Several children in the car were taken to Chesapeake General for minor injuries. Histand was cited for the accident.

Corey Danon Whitley, 33 died when his mptorcycle crashed following a police pursuit on Saturday, July 19 in Portsmouth, Va.

The private Harley-Davidson Museum, located in Harley's hometown of Milwaukee Wisconsin for nearly 105 years, opened its doors to the public for the first time on July 15, 2008. Exhibits will tell the stories of the people, products, history and culture of Harley-Davidson through both chronological and thematic exhibits including a procession of landmark motorcycles from the Company's 105-year history. Vintage photographs, posters and other artifacts will also explain major moments in the Company's history such as the entrepreneurial start in 1903, survival during the Great Depression, involvement in WWII, and the landmark buy-back from AMF in 1981. A special Engine Room display provides information on Harley-Davidson engines and the science behind how they work. Another special exhibit describes the birth of motorcycle clubs in America.

The investigation was initiated after 100 pictures showing public nudity and bikers engaging in public sexual activity taking place during the motorcycle rally were dropped off to the Travis County Commissioner's Office. The popular motorcycle rally has been held every summer in Austin for the past 14 years and this year’s attendance was estimated at 40,000 bikers. Officials indicated they were aware of public nudity during the rally. A Texas Judge indicated being topless was not a violation of law in Texas, however nudity along with engaging in sexual activity in a public setting may be.

Officials say they are concerned that the popularity of gas-sipping motorcycles and scooters could lead to more deaths as inexperienced drivers take to the roads. State Troopers are distributing a safety DVD to anyone buying a motorcycle. According to officials 36 of the 99 fatal motorcycle fatalities between July 2006 and December were riders with beginner licenses. 25 additional riders dying in fatal motorcycle accidents didn't even have a license. Motorcycle riders were at fault in about 75% of the wrecks. Causes cited included speeding, driving while intoxicated and failing to yield.

The NAACP and local black community leaders say it would be a mistake to end the spring biker rallies that take place each year near Myrtle Beach. Local officials want to eliminate the mot5orcycle rallies completely because racial tensions have played a part at the bike rallies. The area is known for two rallies. The Atlantic Beach Bikefest draws a predominately black biker crowd while the Harley-Davidson rally one week earlier draws predominately white bikers. This year a Coastal Carolina University student was shot to death during Bikefest. Previous Atlantic Beach town councilman John Sketers along with the NAACP wants security improvements made at the rallies so they can continue. The NAACP and Sketers believe ending the events would be bad for local race relations.

The new Indian Motorcycle Company located in Kings Mountain, N.C will soon unveil the 2009 Indian Chief. Four Chief models will be offered. Chief Standard $30,999, Chief Deluxe $31,999, Chief Roadmaster $33,999, Chief Vintage $35,499. Primary differences between models are levels of trim, seating configurations, fender design, paint combinations, and accessories.
Each model will feature Indian’s own power-train: an air-cooled, fuel-injected, pushrod Power Plus 105 cubic inch V-twin motor with a 6-speed transmission.

Jarrett Andrew Proctor, 21 of Brandywine, Md. lost control of his 2008 Suzuki Hayabusa in a curve on “The Tail of the Dragon” around 8:50 p.m. Monday, April 21. Proctor skidded about 230 feet before running off the right side of the road and crashing into a tree. The motorcycle and rider then fell another 25 feet down an embankment where his body and motorcycle were found by the Highway Patrol. The Tail of the Dragon is an 11 mile stretch of Route 129 at Deals Gap, connecting Tennessee with North Carolina. The road has 318 curves in 11 miles and is known as America's number one motorcycle and sports car road.

According to a report released by the state Division of Motor Vehicles, a record 183 people died in motorcycle accidents in North Carolina in 2007 as compared to 61 in 1997.

Mention the name Cape Hatteras and most people think of stormy weather. I determined to find out more about the remote island just off the coast of North Carolina. With a map, a few notes gathered from researching on the internet and my old 1981 BMW R100 RS motorcycle, I set out to explore the island on July 11, 2007 in an effort to learn more about the islands history and culture. Soichiro Honda began producing motorcycles in Japan about 1946 to satisfy a thirst for cheap transportation in war devastated Japan. Honda began his effort by installing military surplus engines in bicycles. As Honda became more prosperous, he designed his own 50cc engine for the bicycles. The first motorcycle that featured a completely Honda designed motor and frame was produced in 1949. It was called the Model D for Dream. Kwinci Lundahl 29, a business major from Las Vegas, Nevada rode her Yamaha Star motorcycle into Kitty Hawk Saturday Afternoon, October 14, 2006 after spending about 40 days on the road from her starting point in New York.
