Grassroots Organizers Open Office on Outer
Banks to Support Barack Obama for President
Approximately 100 people gathered throughout the afternoon at the grand opening of the “Grassroots for Obama” headquarters to celebrate an historic occasion. April 13th, 2008 marked the first time in Outer Banks history that an office supporting a presidential candidate has opened for business on the Outer Banks.
Completely staffed by volunteers, the organization “Grassroots for OBAMA,” is independent from Barack Obama’s official national campaign. The effort was organized by local residents to increase momentum on the Outer Banks for the presidential campaign of Senator Barack Obama.

Volunteers and other Outer Banks residents interested in learning more about Barack Obama’s campaign converged at 2701 N Croatan Highway, Kill Devil Hills, and listened to speakers, including prominent local politicians, talk about the urgency of this year’s presidential election.

Ed Olsen
Outer Banks resident Ed Olsen addressed the crowd first, noting that under President Bush many new terms have been created that have damaged the country’s moral standing in this country and throughout the world. The terms included “Extraordinary Rendention,” a new concept that describes sending prisoners to foreign countries to be tortured, ”Enemy Combatant,” a term that allows prisoners to be held indefinitely and ” Moral Waver,” a phrase that describes the new policy of allowing people with criminal records to join the military in-order to replenish the ranks.
Mr. Olsen declared Senator Barack Obama the only presidential candidate with the strong moral leadership qualities needed to repair our country’s standing in the world.

Dare County Commissioner Warren Judge
Dare County Commissioner Warren Judge said political leaders can not do it alone and need citizens to get involved with the process. Judge stressed that government bureaucracy is one of the biggest problems the next president will have to deal with to get anything done. As an example, Judge noted the high price of gasoline to consumers at a time when oil company profits are at record highs.

Dare County Commissioner Virginia Tillet
Dare County Commissioner Virginia Tillet told the crowd she believed Barack Obama was the man who could make the country better and reminded everyone, “Yes, We Can make it happen.”

Dalton Boyd
Dalton Boyd, district coordinator for the official Obama Campaign in northeastern North Carolina said he was inspired by the efforts Outer Banks residents have made to open the office. Boyd asked everyone to stay engaged and suggested that supporters host meetings in their homes to inform family and friends about Barack Obama,

Dr. Issa Jahi
Dr. Issa Jahi, a Professor of History at Elizabeth City State University reminded the audience that if they remain vigilant in their precincts during the campaign, we will win the state.. Jahi is the coordinator for grass roots organizations throughout North Carolina through the web site, www.ncforobama.com.

Damian Conyers
Damian Conyers, a Manteo High School graduate told the audience the country needed to change direction and believed Barack Obama was the man who could move the country in the right direction.
Inside, new volunteers rushed to sign up to help Barack Obama become the next President.
