Thanksgiving 2006 Nor'Easter
The worst of the Thanksgiving nor’easter that struck Kitty Hawk and the Outer Banks Monday evening, moved out of the area around noon Wednesday. As the winds died down, clouds opened up to let the first sunshine seen in days peek through. When Kitty Hawk residents left their homes to survey the damage, they found flood waters and debris had closed the Beach Road as well as many streets between the highways. Power lines were dandling just about everywhere you looked.
The damage was not contained to the beach area though. Erick Gardner, owner of the Southern Bean Coffee Shop at the Dunes Shopping Center, reported he was making coffee for his customers with a generator around 6:30 Wednesday morning when he felt the entire building shaking around him. Within a few moments he heard a crash and saw the sign in front of the center had blown away pulling its concrete base out of the ground with it.
Along the ocean front the new Hilton Garden Hotel suffered damage to its vinyl siding and lost about 15 feet of sand to ist beach. Scores of ocean front decks suffered damage and destruction.

The by-pass highway in Kitty Hawk suffered minor flooding at the normal trouble spots; loose shingles could be seen everywhere and traffic lights failed to work.
The SOLO gas station at mile post 4 lost part of the roof protecting its fuel pumps. However, the stations employees had quickly collected the large metal roof panels that were blowing around before they could cause further damage.
By 2 pm Wednesday afternoon, electrical power was still out for thousands of Outer Banks residents with a promise from officials that it should be restored by early evening.
A coastal Flood Warning watch was cancelled for most of the northern Outer Banks due to the diminishing wind conditions.
In Cape Hatteras National Seashore, many of the park's beach boardwalks were heavily damaged or washed away. Park beaches suffered considerable beach erosion and storm debris remains scattered along beaches.

Several areas of NC Highway 12 on Hatteras Island were closed due to ocean over wash. Vehicles trying to to go south were turned back at the Oregon Inlet Bridge. Significant over wash was reported just north of Rodanthe.

The worst damage reported from the Thanksgiving nor'easter seemed to be concentrated around Nags Head where 2 buildings were completely destroyed and another 55 were condemned as uninhabitable. Hatteras Island reported 11 heavilly damaged buildings and Southern Shores reported 1 building with heavy damage.
Cost to the Town of Kitty Hawk
The town of Kitty Hawk announced on December 15 in their town news letter that the Thanksgiving Nor’easter cost the Town treasury $24,606.79. The amount included the cost of providing additional emergency personnel and equipment from the Police and Fire Departments, as well equipment and personnel used in the Public Works Department and Planning and Inspections Department.

TUESDAY 11/21/06
The Thanksgiving nor’easter tore into Kitty Hawk and the Outer Banks on Monday night with wind gusts up to 67 mph reported at Pea Island. The storm was expected to continue through the holiday. Forecasts at the time called for near hurricane force wind gusts to continue along the Outer Banks until the storm ground its way out of the area.
The US Coast Guard issued a heavy weather bill for the North Carolina coast from Surf City, N.C., to South Santee River, S.C. To minimize the risk of injury or accidents the Coast Guard asked boaters to adequately prepare themselves and their boats before taking to the waters. The National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration predicted seas between 10-14 feet with inland coastal seas generating 6-foot seas.

A record rainfall of 3.38 inches was set at Cape Hatteras on Tuesday November 21. That broke theprevious record of 2.17 inches set in 1980.

WEDNESDAY AM 11/22/06
After huddling in their wind shaking homes Tuesday night, Outer Banks residents awoke Wednesday morning, November 22 to power outages throughout the area. By 8 am, winds had subsided to less than 20 mph, revealing extensive flooding near the beach, downed power lines, and fears that the next several high tides combined with the high storm surge could bring even more damage to the beach front.

The strong low pressure that brought the nor'easter was still just off the North Carolina coast. The storm was expected to travel slowly north and northeast throughout Thanksgiving Day. Northeast winds were expected to continue in the 35 to 45 mph range throughout Wednesday morning. Gusts up to 65 mph were forecast to be possible along with will higher than normal astronomical tides left residents expecting significant flooding and beach erosion along the oceanfront.

Warnings were issued telling people to stay out of the water because of the danger of rip currents.

The Coastal Flood Warning remained in effect until 7 am EST Thursday. A radio broadcast announced that all electrical customers should have their power back on by 8 pm.
