Jett Provides Rock & Roll Relief To the Outer Banks |

| Joan
Jett and the Blackhearts rocked historic Roanoke Island with a pulsing
beat that quickly brought fans to their feet. "Shake it, Sing, it,
Show it off!!" yelled Joan, and the crowd responded at the Outdoor
Pavilion on Roanoke Island Festival Park, Saturday night, Aug. 13, 2005.
The evening entertainment began with the band Red
Metric from Chesapeake Va. With temperatures in the 90’s and
the setting sun aiming for their eyes, the high energy band that was nominated
“best metal act” by NineVolt Magazine was charged with warming
up the audience. Using a powerful drum beat, awesome guitar rifts and
perfectly pitched vocals they got everyone’s juices flowing quickly. |
||
| Up
next were the Smithereens,
a band with over 25 years of Rock and Roll experience that have sold over
4 million albums worldwide. Their music has been featured in such movies
as Bull Durham, Backdraft, Boy's Don't Cry, and many others. The lead
singer noted that the group had no other skills to offer except Rock and
Roll. They wrapped up their performance with the crowd pleasing rock song,
"A Girl like You," that had the audience begging for more. |
||
| With
the lights still out, Joan
Jett and the Blackhearts quietly slipped onto the stage without announcement.
Her fans immediately charged their way through the $60.00 gold seats to
the edge of the stage where Jett immediately showed everyone why she is
the one your mother warned you about. Energized and having fun, the band
whipped through their greatest hits "Cherry Girl," "Do
you want to touch me there?" Don't give a dam about my reputation,"
and "I Love Rock in Roll." Two songs from her latest CD, “Androgynous"
and "Five" reflected her growth from a sexy rocker to an androgynous
sexy rocker from New York City. Joan Jett and the Blackhearts proved an excellent choice for the first major rock and roll benefit concert on the Outer Banks. They cut their first album titled "I Love Rock'N'Roll" almost 25 years ago. Jett’s performance proved she still loves rock & Roll and she demonstrated the power of rock and roll to the audience. The theme of their music cries out for the freedom of the individual and says it’s OK to be who you are and have fun. Stay tuned for more about the concert. |
||
| The
Rock & Roll benefit concert was sponsored by the Kitty Hawk, First
Flight and North Banks Rotary clubs. Many businesses on the Outer Banks
(to be named later) also contributed in the effort to raise money for
use in emergencies such as Hurricane Isabele. |
