Kitty Hawk Police Officers Lee Twiddy & Hondo

Hondo is a very special dog. He is a Belgium Malinios and a member of the Kitty Hawk Police Department. He was part of The Special K-9 Program started in 1999. Officer Lee Twiddy was the first Kitty Hawk Police Officer entrusted with the full time care of Hondo. Hondo was trained at the Bullocks Training Center in Greenville, North Carolina. The center specializes in training dogs for multi purpose use, narcotic identification, tracking fugitives and lost persons. After completing two and a half years of intensive training in voice commands, scent identification and tracking, Hondo was ready to hit the beat at the Kitty Hawk Police Station.
One of Hondo’s most recent arrests occurred in Currituck County. Officer Twiddy and Hondo tracked a fugitive that had left the scene of a high speed auto chase. They swabbed the steering wheel for the fugitive’s most recent scent and Hondo trailed him over rough terrain, woods and swamps and captured the fugitive.
He has captured over 12 suspects and has participated in over 400 drug arrests in Dare County. He is trained to identify marijuana, cocaine, methadone, or crystal meth, and heroin Kitty Hawk participates in a Mutual Aid Agreement with Dare, Currituck, and Hyde Counties, so life can be very interesting and busy for Officer Twiddy and Hondo.
In June, 2004, a prisoner was brought in to Doctor Kessler office for treatment. He was wanted in Florida for assault and was being held in custody here in Dare County until Florida officials could extradite him. He slipped the guard at Doctor Kessler’s office and disappeared somewhere between Sandpiper Cay and Doctor Kessler’s. A thorough search of the area failed to disclose his whereabouts and Hondo was called for. The fugitive was found in a hedgerow crouching in a low culvert in an area officers had walked past several times. He was virtually invisible to the eye, but to Hondo, it was all in the scent. He quickly tracked the man down and the prisoner was returned to Dare County officials.

Hondo is trained to distinguish certain scents and he will be demonstrating this ability at the Kitty Hawk Heritage Day Celebration, Saturday September 25, 2004. In case of rain, come Sunday Sept. 26. An old vehicle will be used to demonstrate narcotic searches and tactics used to locate hidden caches of illegal substances. Demonstrations will be given hourly throughout the day by Office Twiddy and Lieutenant Garrett, K-9 Supervisor.
