The
Chicamacomico
Life-Saving Station opened in 1874. The original building served the
men working at the station until a new one was built in 1911. The present
complex of buildings at the Chicamacomico Life-Saving Station Historic
Site in Rodanthe, NC are listed on the State Register of Historic Places
and probably represents the most complete Life Saving Service historic
site in the United States. The station was one of 26 on the North Carolina
coast that stretched from Deal’s Island next to the Virginia border
to Bogue Inlet in the south. The station gained international fame in
1918 when its crew rescued 42 men from the burning English tanker Mirlo
after it was torpedoed by a German submarine. View is from the ocean side. |
