Aishu and her father, Vinod Venkataraman completed their 2008 visit to the Outer Banks with a special concert performance at Outer Banks Yoga Studio in Kitty Hawk on March 31st. Playing a special violin, Aishu was joined by her father playing the Mridangam, (South Indian percussion drum). They began the evening performance with a tribute to Ganesh, Lord of success and destroyer of evils and obstacles. Starting with soft exotic notes, the couple slowly created a series of notes through improvisation that eventually swelled into a crescendo of classical Indian music. Several times, throughout the evening the audience joined in with claps as drummer and violinist traded the lead in search of new notes and crescendos that represented Carnatic, or the South Indian style of music. Occasionally, Vinod would pause and explain the music and where they wanted to take it. The two received a standing ovation after their two hour concert and remained in the studio to talk with members of the audience and answer questions.
Aishu began playing violin at the age of two-and-a-half. She was recently accepted into the Berklee College of Music with an emphasis on jazz performance. She has the unique distinction of being the youngest student ever accepted into this four year college at the age of 13. Aishu's tonal quality, spectral purity and strong bowing technique are the hallmarks of her performance style. Her average day begins at 5 AM and includes 5 to 6 hours of practice and a whole day at school. She maintains a rigorous concert schedule and is an exceptionally talented swimmer. Her latest CD, Bliss was produced solely for the benefit of women and children with aids and all proceeds will go to an international relief fund for Children with Aids.
Aishu and Vinod Venkataraman's visit to the Outer Banks was sponsored by the Dare County Arts Council with Grass Roots Funding from the North Carolina Arts Council. These funds were specifically set aside by the Arts Council to present quality Arts in Education programming in every Dare County School
